Heydar Aliyev Airport is 20 km east of central Baku, according to the airport’s own FAQ. The cheapest way to cover that distance is the H1 Aero Express bus, and for a lot of travellers it is also the right one. This page covers the bus itself, then the cases where a car is worth paying for. If you already know you want a car, our airport to city centre transfer page covers the booking.
What the H1 bus is
BakuBus runs the airport line as route H1 and calls it the Airport Express. It links the airport with two points in the city: the Koroglu transport interchange and 28 May metro station. Both are places where you can change to the metro.
The line runs 24 hours a day. BakuBus gives a 15-minute interval, and the fare is 1.30 AZN. The airport’s own site gives 30 minutes from the airport to the last stop, and says traffic and local conditions can change that.
The buses are Neoplan coaches built for the route. BakuBus says they have large luggage compartments, air conditioning and passenger information screens. The luggage space matters more than the fare: a suitcase each is not a problem.
How to pay
This is the part that catches people out. BakuBus lists bank cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, a BakıKart travel card, and two local apps, m10 and Birbank. Cash is not on the list.
There is a small inconsistency on the operator’s own site. The English page says local and international bank cards. The Azerbaijani page says local cards only. We cannot tell you which is current, so carry a second way to pay. A phone wallet is the simplest backup.
BakuBus also says it keeps an information stand at the airport, with staff on duty through the day. If the card reader refuses your card, that is where to ask.
Where the bus leaves you
The bus ends at a fixed stop, not at your hotel. From Koroglu or 28 May you continue by metro, by taxi or on foot, with your luggage. That last stage is the part people forget when they compare prices.
If your hotel is near either stop, the bus is hard to beat. If it is across the city, add a taxi ride to the bus fare and the time to find one. The comparison then looks different, especially with bags.
When the bus is the right answer
Take the bus if you are travelling light, landing in daylight, and staying near the centre. Two people with cabin bags and no fixed schedule gain very little from a private car on this route. A car uses the same roads into the city.
The bus is also a good answer for a solo traveller on a budget, or anyone who wants to see the city’s edge before reaching it.
When a car earns its cost
The case for a booked car is luggage, group size, arrival hour and certainty. Four people with checked bags still have to get from the last stop to the hotel. A family with a pushchair has the same problem, twice.
A landing after midnight is a different experience with a name board waiting. The bus runs all night, but your hotel desk and the last leg from a bus stop may not keep the same hours. Our night arrival guide covers that case in detail.
For one or two travellers, the cost gap between a bus and a car is wide. For four it narrows, because a car is priced per vehicle rather than per head. Work it out for your actual group.
The official taxi rank
If you decide on a car after landing, use the rank. The airport says you order an official taxi through the taxi operators’ marshals, outside Terminal 1, in the pick-up area on the second line. That is what separates it from anyone offering a ride inside the arrivals hall.
If someone is collecting you
The airport lists more than 2,000 parking spaces: 835 at Terminal 1 and 1,166 at Terminal 2. Those counts include reserved spaces and spaces for rental cars. A friend or driver meeting you has somewhere to wait. Tell them your terminal before you fly.
Road closures and big events
When the city closes streets for an event, such as the Formula 1 street race, the last part of any trip into the centre meets the same closures. A bus drops you at its fixed stop and leaves the rest to you. A driver who knows your address in advance can choose an approach that is still open.
Nothing from the airport reaches a circuit gate on race days. The race organiser says roads close around the track and taxis stop at drop-off points nearby. Our Formula 1 guide covers that separately.
Getting back to the airport
Plan the return before you need it. Departure timing is less forgiving than arrival: a late bus costs a flight, not an hour. From the city, the same H1 route runs back to the airport around the clock.
If you booked a car for the arrival, arrange the return at the same time. That is usually simpler than sorting it out from a hotel lobby on the last morning.

Common questions
Where does the Baku airport bus go?
BakuBus says route H1 runs between the airport, the Koroglu transport interchange and 28 May metro station.
How long does the airport bus take?
The airport gives 30 minutes from the airport to the last stop. It adds that local conditions and traffic can change that.
Does the airport bus run at night?
Yes. The airport says the Aero Express line runs around the clock. BakuBus says the same, and gives a 15-minute interval.
How much is the airport bus?
BakuBus lists the H1 fare as 1.30 AZN.
Can I pay the airport bus in cash?
BakuBus lists bank cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, a BakıKart, and the m10 and Birbank apps. Cash is not on the list. Its English page says local and international cards; its Azerbaijani page says local cards, so carry a second way to pay.
Is there help at the airport if I am unsure?

Is there an official taxi rank?
Yes. The airport says you order an official taxi through the taxi operators' marshals, outside Terminal 1 in the official pick-up area on the second line.
When is a private transfer better than the bus?
With checked bags, a group of four, small children, a landing after midnight, or a hotel far from the last stop. Two people with cabin bags in daylight rarely need one.
